I think it has to do with the way MyID’s system pulls the data (or doesn’t) from SW’s. I work for another airline and SW flights always show the red frowny face. There are other airlines that show the green smiley face even when oversold. I’ve found Staff Traveler to be a lot more helpful.

If you select southwest as the airline you are searching for instead of all airlines, you seem to get accurate smiley/frowny faces. Another trick I’ve found is to go to book the ticket on the SWA app, and try various numbers (1-8) of tickets to purchase. It won’t let you buy more than are available (shows unavailable), so you can gauge open seats that way. Doesn’t do much good for knowing how many standbys there are, though.

The reason for the red face on all SW flights is that SWA fare bucket availability does not match what idtravel looks for. Usually it only has 9 seats (which means, anywhrte from 9 to 900 seats) in one fare bucket. And idtravel thinks it is then almost full.
