I’ve flown the 737 both with autoland and HUD and I’ll take autoland every day. I can’t stand that HGS. 33 years of flying looking at instruments and now all of the sudden I have to relearn what I’m looking at while squinting at unfamiliar symbology that gets washed out by the sun because we’re too cheap to buy the sunshades that clip onto the plate of glass it’s projected on to.

Plus, using both autopilots for autoland, the airplane is capable of an autopilot flown go around, which would hopefully reduce some of the crazy go around videos we’ve had to watch during CQ over the last several years…

The HUD is cool in its own way, but after having used both, in a real low viz situation I’d much rather have the Autoland. Not that they give a $__t what I think.

THATS what that is. Uh, I found the HUD sunshade. Dig in the bin and you may find one.

Does anybody know, but my understanding is that’s required to be onboard? Seems like only 1/10 of our airplanes have them.

Maybe the layer starts at 300’. A CAT 3 ILS is hand flown from 1000’.

Gotta shoot practice HUD takeoffs and approaches to be CAT 3 certified.

My thoughts exactly. Have to be able to see the symbology to fly it precisely. There’s been a few times I’ve seen landing right into the sun when even in the fog it’s difficult to see the HGS symbology because it’s washed out by the bright sunlight.

JetBlue’s E190s have dual HGS aboard and both sides have clip-on sunscreens (not to mention a dedicated space to store the sunscreen beneath the glare shield for easy access)
