Living near BWI
Class date in October.
I hear BWI is a pretty easy base to land, and have two questions…
Any suggestions on places to live within 90min driving?
late 30’s married with toddler, looking at Newark DE rural suburbs bc good schools, low taxes, beaches relatively close, and also closer to fam in NY/NJ, but open to hear ideas in MD or PA
Also, if I base at BWI but live in Delaware (or anywhere other than MD), do I still pay Maryland income tax?
inb4 ‘just apply big 3, bro’
thanks!

Just know that BWI can be one of our bases that take forever to get off reserve and into a line. Happy to have you join up, just know it may take longer for you. New hires who get their first base are built hard lines, so every time a new pilot gets awarded BWI, you are artificially held down. Once you have been here for awhile that issue starts to lesson, just know that going in.

I have heard about this. I have no 121 time so can’t really compare line to reserve, I assume holding a line is much better… but from what I understand driving to work for reserve is a lot better than airline commuting to reserve. Can you ballpark how long “forever” might be, like months or years? Also what is a blank line? And we are guaranteed 15 days off a month on reserve right?
Line: You bid for and are awarded a line of scheduled flying. You are not on reserve.
Blank line: A line or mixed reserve and scheduled trips built from vacation/training pulls.
Commuting to anything has its challenges.

Reserve: a block of days (3 or 4) set up as AM or PM RAP, Reserve Availability Period. Example, in PHX the PM RAP starts at 10AM. Scheduling can assign a trip with a two hour callout. Your trip can vary—a day trip, multiple day trip, or no trip. Either way, you have to be able to show within two hours. If you commute to reserve, you have to be in domicile for the start of your RAP, so AM reserve (0400 start) will result in day before travel.

For hypothetical, say if I am on a AM reserve 0400 show at BWI does that mean the earliest flight is 0600 with the 2hr callout? So if I live an hour drive away the earliest I leave my house is 0430-0500? Or do I have to be ready to be at the airport at 0400?

thank you for the clarity. Does your first day reserve brief come the night prior?

Sometimes they try to pull a fast one and put a trip on your board (online schedule) the night before trying to bait you into a trip that starts at 0500 let’s say.
Once you are on the line, knowing the contract is extremely important.

0400 is the earliest they can call you. You then have two hours to report to the pilot lounge.
