SURF-A is one of the first cockpit alerting software solutions to provide pilots with direct aural and visual alerts of potential runway hazards.

Honeywell’s groundbreaking SURF-A cockpit alerting software will give pilots the precious time they need to recognize hazards – like an intruder aircraft on the runway– and take corrective action to avoid what could be a fatal accident. SURF-A will play a key role in accident prevention as air traffic expands, airports become more congested, and the number of runway safety incidents increases. Industry estimates show an incursion happens daily somewhere in the world.

Highlights:
  • Detects traffic and alerts within 30 seconds to collision
  • Provides direct aural and visual alerts to the Pilot
  • Uses GPS, ADS-B and advanced analytics
  • Complements other runway safety solutions like SmartLanding, SmartRunway available on EGPWS MKV-A today
  • Launches in 2025, pending FAA approval

SURF-A Speeds Response Time, Alerts Pilots Directly
The software enhances situational awareness and gives pilots the right information, at the right time and in the right place to enhance runway safety. Most other solutions alert the control tower of potential problems but don’t alert pilots directly, which can delay response time.
SURF-A provides real-time aural and visual alerts to pilots when their aircraft is on a trajectory to collide with an aircraft on the runway within 30 seconds. SURF-A uses GPS data, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipment and advanced analytics to pinpoint the exact location of traffic hazards on or near the runway.
SURF-A accesses data directly from the ADS-B Out equipment installed on aircraft and airport ground vehicles. It establishes the current location and movement of all ADS-B equipped traffic within the runway engagement zone and uses advanced algorithms to identify anything that could cause an incursion within the next 30 seconds.

SURF-A Takes Runway Safety to New Heights
The new SURF-A technology joins Honeywell’s expanding portfolio of runway safety products known as Smart X. It includes the Runway Awareness and Advisory System and the SmartRunway and SmartLanding software, which took runway situational awareness to the next level when they were introduced 15 years ago.
Those technologies, which come as a software upgrade to an aircraft’s required Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS), boost pilot situational awareness during taxi, take-off and landing.
