The earliest slot they have is in September. Seems there's been some rule change regarding the ATP and a bunch of military guys are trying to beat the deadline or else. Go figure.

Save your money. Spend it on a really good interview prep and be ready when your phone rings. In this hiring climate, there is no reason to shell out any money on a type rating. Heck, United will even pay you 6k a month to do your 737 type in Denver.

Everyone tried to get their written done before the August, 2014 deadline. You have 2 years from your written to get your practical done. These guys are trying to get their practical done before that two year deadline expires.
Let's not forget you used to be able to take the written whenever you wanted, now you have to get approval to take the written...point being is that it was possible that a ton of guys were taking the written before they met the ATP practical eligibility requirements. (I would have done the same thing).
It is also possible that those same guys are just now meeting the un-restricted ATP requirements...especially if they were single seat fighter types.
As for your original question about getting the type?
Not worth it at this point...unless you are a mil guy who is out of currency because you were doing real world non flying boots on the ground jobs. If you are a Part 121 guy don't bother. If you are qualified, they will call you.

I just got my type with my ATP. All my mil time is T-37/38 and SE Turbo Prop so I wanted a little extra something to boost my resume (plus show commitment yadda yadda yadda). Plus it cost nearly the same as it would have just to do it in a Seneca or something since I used my GI Bill.

I to am an all civilian flight time vet. The way it was explained to me by a SW recruiter is this..... You need X amount of points to get pulled for the interview. A third party company does the "pulling" so it is all points and nothing else. You get points for being a NATOPS O, STANS O, etc,,,, and points for having the type. If you can't check the other boxes then you need to at least get the type so you can check that box. You have to do whatever you can to get X score which triggers the call for interview.
I have been looking at CPT Crew Pilot Training $8500 out the door and their CA location has free housing. Hope this helps.
