I signed up for a high deductible private plan for 3 months to cover the gap. It was pretty reasonable but my wife had coverage through work and we didn’t have kids at the time so it was just me. It’s unfortunate that this is still an issue in this country and only appears to be going in the wrong direction now. Maybe one day we’ll join the rest of the industrialized world. Unfortunately until then you’re at the mercy of your employer and Spirit certainly isn’t ever going to do the right thing.

There's a game to play that can largely mitigate that where you sign up for catastrophic coverage for a month and then sign up for company COBRA (I think that's what it's called) in the final 60 days if you need it at any point.

People may not think first year pay, training pay, and new hire health care are voting issues but I certainly do. I don’t want to fly with misfits and would rather attract quality applicants
