Hiring Update

Manpower meeting last week:

1 class/month to June
58 new pilots/month July to November
20+ upgrades/month July to November
December will probably slow because of the holidays
January could go back to 58 and 20 if needed

telejet 04-01-2019 08:09 AM

I am glad to hear that things will be picking back up. Thanks for the update.

I'm not sure I would consider 4 upgrades a month "picking back up" considering that is what it is now and has been for a while......

I'm interpreting that as 2 new hire classes a month from July to November? I wonder how many pilots have already interviewed and are awaiting a class at this time. Thanks for sharing the info.

Westcoastdude 04-01-2019 09:26 AM

How many apps does Spirit have on file?

FDUA 04-01-2019 09:30 AM

Someone just said that April had only 5 new hires. So does that mean it will pick up to 58 a month starting June? Is that guaranteed?

We did one a week last year when we had those numbers.

That’s a lot of training. With those numbers what will the projected numbers be for the year (Jan-Dec)?

What's low? The current highering numbers? We were staffed and didn't need more. 60 and 20 is about the max we can do a month and what we do/did when we go full training.

No. It doesn’t.

What makes you say that? Just because the company has thousands of apps, doesn’t mean all are qualified or competitive. There’s probably many who applied even if it’s not their #1 choice.

Most of the FOs I fly with do not have their apps in at the LCCs. And the few captains I know at my shop aren’t targeting the LCCs. Just my limited experience though.

Spirit will be a great fit for me. Not commuting is huge as is a non double breasted jacket hat wearing culture. Works for some, not for me.

From what you’ve seen, still doesn’t chage the fact that majority of our new hires are ex regional pilots. In the past year it’s been mostly Expressjet and Skywest. There’s still many regional Captains with multiple internal recs that still haven’t got a call.

FDUA 04-01-2019 03:03 PM

How long does it take from the time you interview until you get the study material and start the background process?

Maybe worry about passing the interview and getting hired first.

I still have buddies like what you talked about at the regionals. They’re still waiting on the call from their preferred legacy, I took the first place that called, Spirit, and I’ve already upgraded while they are still waiting and waiting... All while they’re flying around making $90 an hour. I’m not a genius or anything and everyone has to do what’s best for them and their families but I think you need to have a pretty solid reason to keep waiting for that one call and leaving years of would be seniority behind you just for the hope that one day your favorite airline calls. The difference between being on the front of a hiring wave and the back end can be a huge loss of QOL in the latter years of your career.

I completely miss read it. I missed the “per month” part. Thought it was the total not per month, my bad. I edited my post

Is this an April fools joke?

My fault, I apologize. I see what you asked now.

January could be 58/20.

For anyone that asks, yes those are the numbers. That's what came from the staffing meeting and it's the approximate number sent to the instructor group from the DOT over the weekend.

I will say it's always subject to change because: Spirit. We need about another 300 for the year.

Been done before and we didn't have Dallas or Vegas up and running. We can pump those folks through the system no problem. We've been so slow since later last year it has to pop soon. Bring on the upgrades and hiring!! :D

Any chance those 300 are going anywhere other than MCO?

gripngrab 04-02-2019 05:12 AM

Now the numbers from training are 128 upgrades for 2019 according to the OP. Training also put out around the first of the year, 175 upgrades.

I know numbers change according to fleet deliveries, block hours and other things which change the numbers some. But from the original 175 now down to 128 (20 mo Jul-Nov=100, 4mo for 7 months= 28), I just wouldn't put much stock in that being accurate. I can see it dropping more maybe. 100 total upgrades or less for 2019 is my guess.

The company also stated last year on two earnings calls that a new order would be announced by the end of 2018, which became 1st quarter 2019 and is now approximately mid year. Christie now says they are "halfway through the eval process."

FNGFO 04-02-2019 11:25 AM

Obviously it’s not a straight line equation, but we’re taking roughly 10-11 more planes this year which means we need another 120-150 pilots based on however the staffing models shake out. We’re hiring double that which would seem to indicate a fair number of other tails have been picked up in one way or another. Even if some of it in preparation for the 4 NEO’s coming in Q1 of 20.

So does that mean still hiring around 20 a month until NOV?

FNGFO 04-02-2019 11:50 AM

No. That means hiring 58 a month and upgrading 20 a month through November.

wont be putting 300 into mco, maybe 70-80 more out of that would go to mco

Super EZ E 04-02-2019 05:10 PM

I really think Spirit doesn't knows how many Pilots it needs. It's nothing more than a WAG! Plus IMHO the new hires will flood MCO. We will continue to blow up MCO with new hires!! ;)

It’s not commonly understood that most decisions coming from the head of large organizations (and small) are just semi educated WAGs by someone paid a lot of money to make them.

Off topic question. Anyone know of hotels in FLL that offer crew rates?

Priceline is your best bet in FLL. I used to do the 2.5 star express deal for airport south and it was the sleep inn dania beach. Decent hotel, clean, and has good shuttle service.

Well any pick up in hiring would be welcome. The latest vacancy bid was a little depressing. :o

You aren't going to like what I was told today. Plan on only 4 a month for Captains till Sept. "Overtime will never go away". I remember that one posted so many times here!!

I don't even care about upgrade. All I want is to be safe from reserve by the time next fall comes around.

If by the latest, you mean the latest 6 or 7, I’d have to agree.
