You’re not supposed to SLOP in non-Oceanic/Remote airways.

After GOL went down I always offset. And that’s been the recommended practice down south ever since.

The video may be old and pixelated, but the Lucky Charms guy and Mitch Mcconnell's brother explain it pretty concisely.

Always use to SLOP over China and Africa. Never knew how fresh those vacuum tubes were in the radar scope or if the controller was actually at the station or outside having a smoke.

I flew from Lagos to Addis, roughly the same as SEA to FLL, without talking to a single controller the entire way.

There’s a procedure in Africa where we all announced our locations, trying to keep a sense of situational awareness, but it wasn’t perfect.

SLOP’d the hell out of Africa.

but we don’t fly to Africa. And even though South America is decades ahead of the Dark Continent ATC wise, I still feel much better offsetting just because I’ve seen what happens when you don’t.

Also, wake turbulence becomes an issue; everyone flies the same route, and last thing I need is an upset because a 777 flew right overhead opposite direction 1,000’ above...
