Are jumpseats on Spirit reserved via seniority or first-come first-served?

Also, is there any limitation for a new hire to commute on other carriers? (any delay, etc)?

"For Spirit pilots, on Spirit aircraft, the pilot who is first to list gets priority. The jumpseat is available for listing 72 hours in advance. If you are the first one to go online and list for the jumpseat; you have priority. Occasionally, our gate agents misunderstand the jumpseat priority for Spirit pilots on Spirit aircraft. If this happens, you can politely point out the section (10.9.3.B) of the Station Operations Manual (SOM) that explains how to sort the jumpseaters correctly. The SOM can be found in Comply365 > Other Manuals & Guides."

You will have to get updated timeframes on when the company is entering new hires in CASS. Back in the day, it was about halfway through training but I dont know how quick/long it takes now.

Most commutable? That would of course depend upon where you are commuting FROM as well as where you are commuting TO and whether you are talking about reserve long call or holding a line. Also your tolerance for red eyes which some people hate but are generally pretty easy to commute to. Lot of variables that can’t be easily answered without a more detailed question.

Commuting from the middle of the country and was asking about lines where it starts late enough that you can show up on the first day and ends early enough to go home on the last day. I know it’s kind of a moving target.

Alternatively, places where u aren’t working all 18 days because of the way lines are constructed would be interesting too.

You are going to be on reserve for a while anyways. So commuting will depend on what reserve period you are assigned, so I wouldn't worry about what base today has the next trip mix for commuting. It looks like all bases are in play for a newhire, pre displacement, with LAS and FLL being the junior bases on this last monthly bid thats in process right now. As far as working 18 days, you will, because you will be on reserve.

Once you get done with training, you can review the base pairings each month with their bid pack, and make a decision on what base has the better commuting pairings, but I am willing to bet your focus will be on which base you can hold a line in first.

In the end, you are going to be bottom of the list guy, so maximizing days off and commutable pairings are not anywhere close to your next steps. Learning the contract and reserve rules will be the important thing after training, because you will want to know what they can and cant do with you on reserve.

i commuted from DEN to ORD,LAS, DTW, FLL.


ORD HANDS down. Like 75% of trips are commutable from DEN by default. DTW/FLL/ACY/MCO kiss em goodbye.

your only two realistic options are ORD and LAS. And unless you realize you like redeyes, LAS is hell. And LAS has a lot of 10-11pm releases.

Oh like new reserve rules where if they call you too much just say “nah you guy are calling me too much on my reserve days, go find someone else…oh but hey I still want my pay for the day.”

There is about 50 that commute DEN LAS, How many commute DEN ORD?

At spirit? Close to zero. Everyone has this idea that "DEN ORD is the worst commute ever!!!"

I did it for years. Here's a piece of advice that will make the commute extremely easy.

Delete United from your commuter flights list.

If you use American, SWA, spirit and frontier, the commute is EASY.

Very rarely did I share a JS or get kicked off one. LAS was a constant occurrence.


And pretty much every DEN-ORD flight on united will have a united guy either already listed or they'll show 20-30 prior and bump you, that's why I say just remove them from your tries it'll make life easier
