I believe he was canned because he blew it. He could have accepted Spirit's counter offer, but instead chose to play hardball and now someone else going to buy them.

They’re most likely already getting the green light, and the DOJ won’t object because of Spirit’s failing‑firm defenses. An official review can be completed in less than two months. Spirit is already reducing its footprint and divesting from overlapping routes, etc.
