You have to consider the times and relative size. All airlines were much smaller back then and can’t be compared to today. The big legacy airlines only had around 500 aircraft, so relatively speaking Eastern, Pan Am, and Braniff shutting the doors would be considered big players and too big to fail but they’re all gone.

Eastern had a 15% domestic market share a few years before they collapsed. Spirit's market share now is about 1.8%.
