What would life be like as a commuter from the Boston area?

Go to google flights and check the filters for one way and one leg.

Click through the different days.

Reverse it to see getting home.

Lots of flights = easy
Not a lot of flights = not easy.

With 2 or more a day you should be good.

Commuting to reserve is a bit more palatable than it was before, but you will probably still need to embrace the suck for a while. Once you can comfortably hold trips with deadhead deviation that will be the best option, I would say a year would give you plenty of seniority for that. That means PBS will be coming around, too, which could help with getting those DH commutable trips. Commuting is never going to be a bed of roses but with those things in place it may be tolerable.

Is there any kind of commuter policy? Try 2 flights and if you miss no harm no foul or just discretion?

If you miss, call scheduling, tell them your plan to getting into position. In my time, I haven’t heard of any punitive actions being taken against a pilot for commute issues being outside their control.

Its called late check in. It’s the best commuter policy in the industry because it’s vague. It’s in the contract.

Any guesses how long for a new hire to hold locals?
What's the average days off for a line holder?
