Quote: Anywhere in Wright County (West and Northwest). 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County. Good schools. Low Crime. Affordable houses if there is such a thing.

There is a pretty good 2nd Amendment shop up in Ostego.

Yup! Open enroll kids in STMA. Had in-school instruction for almost all of COVID insanity. Cabelas and Fleet Farm nearby. County Sheriff is a great guy. Wright County for the W!

Quote: Super excited to have a CJO with Sun Country! My wife and I are planning to move up to MSP, to avoid the commute. It’s a pretty big cross country move for us, which we have never done, so I’m struggling to figure out the logistics.

My understanding is that training will be around 2 months, not including IOE. I assume we don’t get the actual weekends off, but are there many gaps or two day breaks in that footprint? I know the training is strenuous, so I don’t intend on doing anything too crazy, but perhaps bring the wife up for just one or two days to look around the area for rental houses. I’m not sure if it would be better to move before training, or afterwards, having to fit in the move as I start reserve.

If any of you have experience/advice with this, or suburb recommendations, please let me know!
i would recommend keeping your home address outside of 50 miles of MSP if you are a commuter until you finish training to qualify for a free hotel. There are some nice cities close by that aren’t bad but you will have a high cost of living. Previous posters are correct. The further you move away from MSP the cost of living will drop. Avoid living in the actual cities of Minneapolis or Saint Paul. They are dumpster fires. Trust me I’ve lived here most of my life except during college I was out of state. DM me if you want more info. I’ve been at sun country for a while. Congratulations and good luck with training and the move!

Congratulations and welcome aboard. If lake living is your thing, looking into any of the lakes from Mankato to Faribault would be good. Pretty inexpensive as compared to Minnetonka, Prior Lake, Spring Lake, etc. All are well within the 2hr callout to get to the airport.

I made the exact same move a few years back. Absolutely worth it to not have to commute (Outside of driving to/from work). The South Metro area (Farmington/Lakeville/Apple Valley) is affordable and great for families. Others touched on this topic and I agree, Stay away from the Cities. This would be for your safety and sanity. They are fun to visit occasionally but wouldn't recommend putting roots down in Minneapolis/STP. Cheers and best of luck to you!

Thanks everybody! I assume they cover the hotels all the way through whenever your wait for IOE starts, then you’re on your own?

They will cover all training events. So you’ll get hotels from the night before indoc all the way through end of sims. After that, they will cover all of your OE if you need to commute in the night before or the night your trip ends.

Moved prior
Hey I moved prior to training to St. Paul, still alive and not bad. But I've lived in Seattle/Los Angeles...so if you want a crispy clean subhurb, then yes don't move to the cities...However its been fun for me and my fiancee living near Downtown Saint Paul!

I second doing the CBTs as early as possible and actually pay attention. Most of them are well done, and the systems, well thats your systems so take the time to learn as much as you can through the Aerosim (and write down questions for when class does start.)

Training was a great experience for me. As long as you show up and put in 100 percent 99 percent of the training staff will do the same for you!

Apartment Hunt
I have decided to move and not commute. I am now looking for places to live and the prices are higher than I thought. I’m budgeting on first-year pay and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I’m from Florida, so this will be my first real winter. Having said that, I’m trying to live close to the airport. I have found a place in Hudson, but that drive may get pretty long in the winter. Does anyone have any recommendations on a place to live up there? I’ve done a bunch of research, but nothing beats the referrals of the pilots who already live there. Thank you once again in advance. I truly appreciate anyone's insight, advice, and recommendations.

Reposting because I didn't see this thread, hoping for a little more input. Thank you all in advance 🙏🏻

I know a number of MSP-based pilots who live Hudson and western Wisconsin. They seem to like it. Looks like all freeway to the airport.
