CHS VOR OTS Diverts Flights???
The local paper ran a story that due the the CHS VOR being OTS was causing airlines to divert to SAV and CAE. It was down Thursday and affected 17 flights. How could the VOR cause diverts? I'm not sure of the wx at the time, but the paper did not mention if the ILS was down as well.
There are several other VORs within 200nm (Vance, SAV, CRE, CAE) that could have been used to get to CHS.
Any ideas?
Thanks

No specific idea 73M, though it looks like the RWY 15/33 ILS is out until 03/13.
CHS is used for the missed approach for both the 15 and 33 ILS, but 15 has an alternate. RWY 33 uses the VORTAC for the DME and it is required for the approach in any case. It seems that there was some pretty bad weather there during the mid-week. Let us know if you learn any other details.

Totally missed the fact that the VOR was needed for a missed approach. I was out of town and just skimmed the story, so I have no idea what the wx was during that time.
Thanks for one possible (and most likely) reason!
