Default What prevents thrust reversal in mid-flight?

I remember a Lauda B767 that went down some 20 years ago due to this, but is there something mechanical to prevent a human from deploying thrust reversal in mid-flight? For instance if speed is over X kts, they will not deploy no matter what?

Speaking of that ill fated Lauda fight, does anyone know why the thrust reverser deployed? Software malfunction???

Typically a ground sensing mechanism (AKA weight on wheels switch) will prevent the thrust reversers from deploying in flight. Upon landing, when the switch senses that the aircraft's weight is on its wheels, it allows the reverser levers to unlock.

I'm not familiar with this particular situation, but it's not unheard of to have the ground sensing mechanism fail. This can be overridden to allow certain systems to continue to functions (the pressurization system, for instance).

Same on the Seven Two. There were even two checklists, one for a reverser light in flight and one for if a crew screwed up and went into reverse in flight.

The Lauda report even said if the system had been an older hydro/pneumatic mechanical setup the accident wouldn't have happened.

Wow! Seems scary. If they were (both) to deploy, if just momentarily, while in flight, would that spell disaster, or not necessarily?

Is there a real difference safety wise between emergency stow or idle thrust commanded? Which one does the 727 have? Just one of them deployed James and it ripped the airplane apart. Not sure it would make a difference if both deployed?

The DC-8 used reverse in flight. During upgrade training of an 8 F/O to 727 C [emergency descent exercise] Trainee put 1and3 in reverse. Went home on one engine. Seat cushions replaced.

Concorde used reverse in flight too.

Most airplanes use WoW for cutoff but some use radar altitude (I think the 737 is one).

C-17 can use all 4 TRs in flight. .8M/320 + 4xTR = VVI Mucho Grande! Flight manual limit is 25,000 VVI. Army guys put their hands up in the air like a roller coaster.
