I’ve done union work and been on extended FPL (about 90 days) and I can tell you that flying the line was way easier and a much more attractive use of time.
It’s easy to demonize the ALPA volunteers who have delivered recent results and have been on extended FPL. However, as a matter of policy, it’s the cost of doing the pilot’s business. There’s no way anyone capable of doing the job is going to do so at a loss. More important, should line pilots expect reps to volunteer extraordinary amounts of time to the detriment of their personal, social, and financial wellbeing?
To me, it’s a value proposition. If reps are willing to serve and performing well for the membership, then continue. If they don’t represent a good return on dues dollars then it’s obviously time for a change. I don’t begrudge FPL, but I’ve heard somewhere recently “results matter”.

Still no answer to why the NASC has been inflated to ELEVEN members, just mumbled rambling excuses from Johnson. The whole Insler fan boy club is becoming an absolute embarrassment.

Because getting Todd elected has become the sole focus of the UAL MEC. The Tumi TA was supposed to be a feather in his cap; when it became a roadblock it was simply “paused.”

So what should we call the majority of ALPA committee members who work to provide the resources that make life better for line pilots - and do so without compensation?

There was absolutely no reason that the MEC Com Chair drew FTFPL considering the assistance he had and the little amount of communication they produced. Unless you consider jumping on forums to support his bud.
Many do outstanding work while flying as much of a schedule as they can. Yes there are those who can’t fly a schedule and are deserved of FTFPL. Then there are the others who need to be reigned in. There also needs to be a full accounting of how we spend our dues money. Everyone wants to compare us to DAL and FDX for contractual purposes. Maybe we should compare ALPA dues spending habits.

It's not just the Chair. The Comm Committee has had three pilots (GE, RF & JB) on FTFPL for six years. Only recently did JB start flying a bit. It takes a lot of manpower to create campaign web sites, twitter feeds and storm multiple social media sites including stifling dissent, stacking the moderator ranks and getting pilots banned.

I was just skimming the surface. Contract interpreter(s) is(are) another I would add to the list. Two should be able to split the duties and at least fly half a month.
Didn’t the FTFPL crowd used to be required to at least maintain currency?
