The key to this whole gig is making "money for nothing", or as close as you can come to it. I guess some guys just want to hang out in ops or bore holes in the sky all day. I don't get it. From what I've seen, this job pulls enough life out of a man over a 30-35 year career. 15 days per month should be plenty of TAFB for a line holder to earn a decent living and the total compensation package should reflect that. The fewer hours my car is in the Mogadishu parking lot, the better. TAFB is the enemy. Cash (and retirement) are the key. Work rules = Cash = Money for Nothin'.

Back when glen had us strapped to a bench like Marcellus and Butch, the wise old guys were preaching that we let them have the cash and to safeguard the work rules at all cost. Us? We got our fear on and gave 'em both. How right they were. Now, some guys are jumping through hoops so they can fly on days off and while on vacation.

I'm still fond of my woman, my boat and hopefully soon, my new dog. I value time off and knowing that my B/C fund is growing at a reasonable pace over trying to wrangle every last pay credit hour I can out of a calendar year.

Open time is posted in CCS. You can see open time in any base. You can pick up or trip trade with open time for your own base at any time. You can pick up out of base open trips at 1300 the day prior to the trip.

Trips pay straight time, unless crew scheduling marks an open time trip as a "premium trip" in which case it would pay whatever premium it is advertised with: 25, 50, or 100%. They can rescind that premium markup at anytime prior to a pilot picking it up.

Is it possible to pickup a trip (out of base) thru Crew Companion? I see where you can set up the notifications, but nothing about picking up the trip.

Nope have to call the schedulers to get an out of base pickup

Note: crew desk uses a 30-hour buffer before and after any out of base trip to determine legality, since the system won't automatically calculate the 30/168 limit for them. Caveat emptor.

I am seriously considering updating my resume and aim for UAL. I never thought about this until now. My biggest fear is if Blue gets sold. Additionally we are in contract negotiations. I am looking toward a more secure future. The irony is I make great money, I have a great schedule, great group of pilots to work for. But the fear of being sold is the great unknown.

It's a tough call for me.

Cruzer007 being a fellow blue cat , who do YOU think the possible buyer would be if we merged / bought out ? Your understandble fear made me curious to ask .

Honestly what is it that everyone wants from Blue? JFK, BOS, and the Caribbean. Potential suitors would be Southwest and UAL.

Rightside, are you looking to move on?

Think back to younger days. You're at a good party, having fun. Someone says they heard there's a better party else where. How often did that work out???

No final decision has been made yet I really like where I'm at
