Houston is a pain in the ass to commute from, period. I'm SFO based and 99.9% of the time, commute from Austin. However, this one time at band camp, there were approx 69 folks on the commute list - and I was #57, with 7 folks listed for the JS in front of me.
From what I could tell, this was consistent to LAX as well. No thanks... |

Seriously. When I was a new hire, if I'd been assigned a shoebox with wings and a United logo I'd have been happier than a pig rolling in ****.
I ended up on the ultraguppy so it was pretty close. |

It seems like a fair number of the early draft picks took LAX. Is there any reason for that? Nice place to live maybe?
If you had the same choices from the 9/11 class and you had to commute through IAH, what would be your top 2 or 3 picks, and why? I commuted from IAH to LAX for a couple of years. Pretty easy commute. Lots of flights, no weather delays, numerous airlines (UAL, AA, Spirit, and SWA to hobby if needed). IAH-SFO would be a nightmare for a junior commuter I'd imagine. |

Does this mean hiring should be increasing dramatically?
1) FWIW, Hiring is already aggressive, and has been since the beginning of summer. This was a major improvement to the plan to wait until fall. 2) This is only a single vacancy bid. With ~450 retirements a year there will be movement and bids like this one. It's the combination of bids that tell the story, and not just a single one. |

New Hire Classes and Drops
From the EVP of Flight Op’s mouth (and Kirby), we will need to hire an additional 130+ pilots in addition to what we planned on hiring by April ‘19. Networking apparently added a whole bunch of hours that they weren’t planning on for next year.

Yes I understand WHY they do it, i'm just saying In a business where EVERYTHING is seniority based, this is interesting.... pilots junior to said pilots are getting a choice where the senior new hire doesn't get a choice. Aren't you glad the company can't do that to you line guys? And yes i would be happy with whatever i got if i was in a UA new hire class.... life isn't fair
Be grateful to be based in ORD with United. Could be soooo many worse places to be stagnant than UAL in ORD! :D |

Any airplane that pays as well as the new and improved “guppy” is worth it. Personally I think all the airplane bashing is getting a bit old. I flew the “thunder guppy” and in the day it had the latest technology. PW JT8D engines, no autothrottles, max speed .78 Mach (normally started shaking before then and cruised at .73), two VORs and NDB, full analog ADI and HSI, Collins FD, non-color WX radar, 3 hour max range (need reserves) with people, really noisy cockpit, great eyebrow windows, CWS for those who couldn’t hand fly very well and an autopilot that would track an ILS, VOR and heading bug. Of course Boeing upgraded it to the “yuppy guppy” and gave us flatten CFM engines, partial glass, an MCP with CATIIIA capability, and yet it didn’t go any faster. “92, APU, are the people blue” |

IAH
With the current bids, how long before a new hire can expect to hold IAH? If I had a choice in training, which aircraft would get me based in Houston the quickest?
Thanks |

Timeframe, 5-8 months, give or take. Airbus, a couple years. You get a 757 in training now you’re talking 4 years plus. Or switching aircraft after seat lock to get in sooner. |

Of course it all depends, as things change, but currently the 737 is the jr aircraft there. So that be quickest. That wasn’t the case a few years ago.

Sounds accurate after reading the latest MEC update. “The company has indicated this Vacancy Bid is the first of what will most likely be monthly vacancy bids, continuing over the next six to eight months in preparation for summer 2019.”

How early do new hires get the call for class? Sorry I know it’s been asked before.

Yesterday at the Expo I thought I heard Susan say that they were still interviewing people for the 10/16 class. Does that mean the pool is empty?
