I only have 20ish years left under the current rules, so I need to maximize as much as I can. Any guess of an upgrade time for a new hire? I've considered that I might need to be a fo for my whole career for QOL, but I had at least hoped to have the option.
I think (and hope) upgrade times will come down. But I’ve been thinking that for three or four years now. I’m very happy as an FO though. Pay and benefits are great, plenty of time off, good trips. I wouldn’t worry about coming to UAL any more than any other major.

I'm in same boat only with less time remaining. I'm not worried about it. Things will get moving here shortly, IMHO. Heck with 20yrs you'll be able to experience everything the airline has to offer.

You should probably shoot for Delta and their quick captain upgrades then...

I’d say a realistic worst case scenario, based on recent history, is being on furlough at the 12 year point. But I certainly hope you’re a captain at that point.

or another merger?

Still that's good to hear, thanks for the optimism.

You're going to be just fine Cozmo. If Duckdude has been here for 11 years he was one of the last pilots hired before the 2008 downturn that halted hiring until 2012. The first pilot hired in 2012 is probably 100ish numbers junior to him/her. So what that means is that a 11 years and 6 years effectively have the same bidding power.

Before the summer Duckdude and that 2012 hire will have a shot at a CA seat, and CA will drop to 5-6 years and WB FO will probably settle out in the same area maybe drop to 4.

You have made a great choice and are going to have a great 20 years welcome.

Another option if you want to go somewhere else is displacement. We are parking PS 757’s and replacing them with 737max-10’s. Bid LA or SFO 756 and you may be able to displace into a widebody base when they start drawing down the west coast 756 bases.

That’s probably a terrible strategy if you don’t actually want to fly the 756. Chances are when/if the displacements start happening in 2020 everyone on the list today will have a chance to bid WB FO. Getting a bump nowadays isn’t as big a deal as it was in the 90s when you had seat locks. There’s also a chance that they will just let the 756 fleet attrite out the way they are doing with the CLE guppy base. Also, if you can’t already hold WB FO. You can’t bump to it.

Another thing to think about is that when/if the bump begins for the 756, there are going to be about 80 pilots in each seat that will bump. Junior pilots will probably be stuck because of voluntary displacements. If I’m still on the 756 at that time, I plan to try and bump to a wide body. I know that I’m not the only one either.
