Yep, that’s why I suggested he review the balance sheets at each airline and make the call.

Furloughed with a place to go back to or permanently out of a job? No way to tell what will happen but there are some educated guesses to be made

Thank you all, sound advice, thanks for your time.
Wife is willing to move to UAL base (Northeast), although I’d like to give that commute a try. I want to be at UAL, but I’m old enough to understand how quickly things can turn around in a bad economy (Hoping for the best). It’s being a long road for most of us, I just want to get some insight from the voice of experience. Once again thank you and happy holidays.

Almost impossible to play the airline career chess game. Can’t predict furloughs. Stock market going down doesn’t mean the economy is bad. It’s still up from two years ago. And it doesn’t mean United is gonna furlough. There are no guarantees. Personally I’d make the jump. Your options are a-plenty at UAL. Lots of bases. Lots of planes to choose from. You have 25 years left to reap the benefits of high pay and B fund.

If something catastrophic happened you would pay the price regardless of where you are.

Make the jump. Time waits for no one.

Easy calculus.

Ask yourself which you would regret more.

A potential furlough, one you're not safe from at B6?

The certainty of flying for an LCC where you'll never make $5 a minute, never see the sunrise over the North Atlantic. Never fly to Hawaii, or eat lunch outside in Melbourne and see all the pretty Aussie women.

Outdoor lunches in Paris are one of the highlights of my career.

This really is a no-brainer. Jump.

I get that you are just putting the feelers out for the sake of seeking unbiased advice.

Would the ball player prefer for his career to peak at the double-A level, or make it all the way to the big leagues?

You should be leery of making career decisions in aviation based solely on where you live and where the airline has a domicile. Airlines are notorious for opening and closing domiciles as they see fit. B6 could one day decide it doesn’t see the need for that Florida domicile and you are suddenly not driving to work anymore. Instead you are commuting, but stuck commuting to a job with B6 and not a major....

That’s disingenuous don’t ya think? Ask any double furloughee how big leage UAL was last decade.

It’s not easy decision for the OP, but in good times there’s no question. In bad times retirements between now and 2028 (when they peak) will provide way more buffer.

3rd yr pay = you've been there just over 2 years at jetBlue. It's a no brainer to give that up to go to United.

Not so sure about this one. The rest most def!

To the OP, you’ll be based out of NYC immediately. I know you can get to any NYC airport from S. FL just about anytime of the day. Big plus!
The real decision, for some pilots (I’m guessing you), is can you be apart from mama for what could be over a week in some instances? There is a very good chance you’ll get the 756 to EWR. That’s Global Reserve. 5/6 day stretches with a couple moveable days off. Good luck!
