So a EWR base means you have to be available to be called out of LGA on Reserve. Or being SFO-based may have you originating out of SJC? I'll most likely be commuting for a bit at the outset and just want to get a feel for what sort of living radius I need to keep in mind.
some bases cover multiple airports
SFO: SFO and SJC
LAX: LAX ONT SNA BUR
EWR: LGA AND EWR

Correct, same with IAD/DCA.

correct.

LA= LAX-SNA-ONT
DC=DCA-IAD-BWI
NY=EWR-LGA-JFK
SFO=SFO-SJC and possibly OAK? Not totally sure on that one.

JFK is a moot point now as we don’t currently serve it.

The rest of the hubs only cover one airport.

SFO pilots do not cover Oakland... I don't believe UAL even flies in to OAK.

SJC: I can't speak for the 320, but 737 flying is very minimal there. And the it seems there are plenty of pilots that want trips out of there since they live near SJC.

The drive to SJC from the Sacramento region is about 20 miles further than SFO, and 15-20 minutes longer outside of peak traffic hours.

However, from the SJC parking lot to the gate is about a 3 minute walk, whereas it's 15+ from the SFO employee lot.

All in all, I consider the commute to be the same since I live on the I-80 corridor.

Ah great, thanks.

I guess the trick would be you needed to be within range of the furthest possible originating airport, then you know the closer ones are good.

For short call purposes, you should be in range of the primary airport. There’s no way you would be dinged for not making a SC assignment to LGA or BWI when you are primarily covering EWR or IAD. There is also a clause that always gives you an out. You simply say the traffic is horrible this time of day...I will do the best I can.

Be careful, yes SFO does cover OAK. Big divert base if something happens in SFO. I used to fly exclusively out of OAK whenever I could. Nothing much there for UAL now though. UAL decided to not compete with SW.

supposedly Kirby said at the town halls were gonna go back into Oakland and some undetermined date in time. It’d be nice for some of us Eastbay folk who dread crossing the bay bridge.
