M61 pros:
20mm vs 7.62mm bullet,
6000rpm rate of fire.
less barrel wear if you use sabot rounds (I prefer the tungsten or depleted uranium rounds myself)
No such thing as a gun jam or misfire.
M61 cons:
cant one arm it
2000 round magazine only gets you 20 seconds worth of pew-pew.
magazine takes a 3 person crew about 15 minutes to reload (assuming they prelinked the 20 cans of ammo into one long 2000 round belt beforehand)
cant use the sabot rounds in aircraft (FOD hazard)
ammo not HERO safe

GAU-17 is a nice compromise. We loved it in the MH47. Two trigger buttons, push only one to rip apart soft targets, Push in both and cut down trees. Feeder/de-linker was a pain in the *** but we could change a can in about twenty seconds.
