You need to educate yourself on the SOP regarding masks in the cockpit vice at the training center/sim. Please stop making statements that may give people the wrong impression of what they can and cannot demand of another on this subject.

The sim policy is that you WILL wear a mask. End of discussion. Now to the aircraft.........

I personally reach out to the FO before the trip and let them know that I follow the mask guidance to the letter. However, I do not wear it once the door is closed. Again, as stated in the company/FAA approved policy!

I ask them to please let me know if that will be an issue so we can discuss the situation further and see what solution we can find including seeing if we can get reassigned rather than a last minute WOP for the pilot demanding the mask.

BTW, the above applies to the airplane and to Capts as well. I’ve been dealing with these since day one and I can tell you the pilot making the demand beyond the policy requirements has already lost the fight.

The recommendations by the CDC are largely based on small studies with lots of flaws. Specifically, the Kansas study which ended later in the summer and has been heavily criticized, since after the study ended the facemask mandate counties had a surge in COViD.

The best science available, the Denmark mask study from the Spring and the meta-analysis by the Cochrane Group in the UK show on a population wide basis masks are ineffective at reducing the spread of COViD.

The state that has closed down the most, for the longest, with the most restrictions now has the second highest amount of active COViD cases. California is currently the only state where hospitals are overflowing.

United has the right to mandate whatever they choose, but my job description does not include mitigation of irrational hysteria from coworkers.

If pilots are that concerned about becoming infected with COVID while at work that seems to me like such an irrational, obsessive overreaction I would question their fitness for duty and ask them to leave the pairing with established and agreed upon protocols.

Honestly Lee I don’t know where you find the time or energy. I’m fully aware of the company policy and the differentiation between TK and the line. I have been aware since it’s inception. Never have I said someone MUST wear a mask in the cockpit or else so give it a rest Lee.

I don’t need to reach out to someone to inform them that I follow the mask guidance to the letter. That’s kind of expected is it not? If someone doesn’t follow it then that’s their fault. The way I operate, there is no need to reach out regarding the operation once the door is closed. No one will feel the need to excuse themself from the trip.

Hey dum dum, my wife (a former firefighter/paramedic and current RN) is getting ready to do a 3 month contract in Los Angeles for hospitals that have zero capacity right now. I can’t comprehend how some of the people in the US still think it’s fake.

But they certainly WANT to, I’m guessing.....
