Am guessing you and I aren't conducting the interviews so go through the union if you have an opinion/suggestion you want to express on the process. It's still the company making the final decision. Once a pilot is here they're welcome in every sense of the word and it's on them to perform well and on us to mentor them as we all uphold the standards we expect of each other. They're high standards as they darn well need to be.
Well you pulled us into the mud with the “Pasty white guy” comment. Discrimination is discrimination. Giving special treatment or exclusion based on race, gender or sexual orientation is wrong.

Ok my friend.I didn't think describing myself or around 95+% of the profession for the first 8 or so decades was mud wrestling. I think we've come a long way and there's not one simple solution but let's not pretend the old way of doing things was a process beyond reproach or didn't have its own forms of special treatment - intentional or not.

I am also fully convinced via, you know, our day to day job, that whatever our present methods are they seem to be attracting quality pilots. Let's be the airline everyone wants to fly for and we get to keep attracting great pilots and don't have to worry about these less than constructive conversations.

“Pasty white guy” is certainly not a compliment regardless if you are in that group or the amount of people you are discriminating against is large.

Fine. How about "charming charismatic Caucasian?" or insert your preferred adjective. The point remains.

There are two online assessments. One if I remember is to see if you’ll fit into the culture (asks situation questions specific to work) and the other is the Hogan.
