Default United Bases

Hello;

Can someone explain to me about United bases? I mean I know the US bases ie LAX, Houston, Newark, Chicago etc

so if you select say, Chicago OHare to be your base, and live in Chicago so your not commuting then obviously that has some great benefits, avoiding commuting etc

BUT
then they have bases around the world like, UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Tokyo, how does this work?
Do you treat it like it’s just another American base, or how does it work?
like if your base is Heathrow then all your flights to and back will be Heathrow...? So I take it those pilots likely live in London or Europe at least and get paid in dollars?

sorry for the questions and confusion just wondering how it works

Pretty sure UA has no bases outside of the USA. Any UA pilots living aboard would have to commute into a base in the States.

Pilots are 100% US based... what you are describing is for a flight attendant.

United has pilot bases in EWR, SFO, LAX, IAH, CLE, ORD, DEN, GUM and IAD. There are no pilot bases outside the US (Guam is a US territory as far as I know).

I know UAL pilots that live in South America, Europe, and Asia... and they commute to US domiciles.
It sounds painful, but for them, the juice is worth the squeeze.

Several of my classmates ... LUAL ... nearing retirement now ... went to Guam after the merger ... one guy lived in LA and the other in HNL ... they make it sound like a flying club ... reserve guys with full beards until a trip or training ... say no one has been forced to go there in years and they have tried to accommodate new hires that wanted to go there.

Know of one guy commuting from Bahamas and another was looking at commuting from Poland.

OP's question reminded me of something I wanted to ask:

Can two UA pilots living in the same outstation split a pairing?
One guy flies it in, goes home to days off instead of the hotel. Then another guy starts his work days by taking the plane back to hub.

GUM has a few unique scheduling flexibilities that make a long-distance commute much more of a realistic option than in the mainland bases. It’s been shrinking for years, though, & down to around 60 crews now. The territorial government is trying to reopen to tourism in May but it will be an uphill battle until other countries in the region ease their quarantine restrictions. Wouldn’t be surprised to see further base reductions through attrition over the coming year.
