How often is field standby used? Are there limits, how often do you get called out for field standby? Do you get paid more and how long can they keep you there?
My wife and I are starting to think about where we want to go and pick at the drop. I want to live as far from the city as possible, but still be within SC limits and not make life really difficult, hence all the questions. Thanks everyone.

You don’t get paid more per FSB, but you do get extra pay if you have a number of unused SC or FSBs in a bid period. Each FSB block is 4 hours, although you could get a trip assigned that departs at 5 hours after the start of the duty period. How many you get is a moving target that you can’t really predict, but no more than you would get assigned a trip or SC. There’s a hierarchy game you play on reserve to get your preferred assignments (trip/SC/FSB/LC) that you’ll learn to play.

How often is switching bases available within the same fleet? Can you only switch on vacancy awards and base trades with other pilots?

Normally a vacancy bid… but no limit on how frequent you switch bases… either method works; trade or vacancy bid.

FSBs are normal to see on the 737/320 fleet… not do much on bigger aircraft. Unless bad weather normally sit 4 hours then leave. 2.5 hour SC call out with normal driving conditions… I can’t remember where it’s written but think 200 miles is the baseline used. No limit on SC or FSB… but after first two assigned you get another hour of pay (above 73 hr guarantee)if it’s assigned by crew desk (not picked up voluntarily).

FSB/SC :

After your first two UNUSED FSB/SC (doesn’t matter if you aggressive pick up or get assigned) you get an hour add pay for up to the next three unused FSB/SC.
After that, if you aggressive picked up any of the first 5, then you don’t get extra pay until you reach another level (not sure what the number is, but pretty sure it’s unattainable).
To play the Reserve game, I’ve been trying to aggressive pick up two FSB/SC first thing at the beginning of the month...you’re pretty much set to be left on LSR (Long Call) the rest of the month, as they have to start paying you that extra hour add pay after that. On the BUS there’s 40+ reserves on any given day (for now)
