That gives a seniority bump to pilots in those bases who chose to live in those higher cost bases to make up for the cost of living difference. I live 20 minutes from one of our junior hubs and even though I’m junior, I have more disposable income than some equal seniority people who commute from BFE for the same amount of days worked because I can pick up premium flying short notice and can pick up extra flying days equal to the days they spend commuting. That is actually better for the company (fewer pilots needed), and better for the value of our standby benefits (it encourages fewer commuters).

If the company is having a tough time getting employees in our more desirable/higher cost of living areas, then they should do what every other company in the world does besides the airlines and pay them more to live in a higher cost area. We are already doing this for Guam based pilots. SFO, EWR, and maybe LAX should be next.

I’m a commuter with two 35 hour layovers next month in my low cost Midwestern town. Nobody is crapping in the streets here or flash mobbin’. No communist lunatics like the SF DA to worry about either. Works for me.

Yeah...what was the temperature there is weekend? Let me guess, low of 19 degrees, and its only November.

The Midwest sucks & the coasts are too crowded & expensive. You either pay way too much to join the rat race or you save your money in a boring town with crappy weather. No one has a magic formula.

I like the way you think. Please stay on the coast or in the Midwest.

Pretty impressive that after the Covid downturn we are talking about captain slots not being filled. What's your take on direct entry captains?
Although anyone taking that position needs to realize that they will be displaced at some point but it does take the sting off the first year pay.

Just a question, don't have a stroke! It did happen at Delta.

it can’t happen due to contract and FOM limits. Off probation and 500 hours at United is a minimum.

No reason for direct entry Captains. We have plenty of experience here in the right seat. The company just needs to allocate the flying where pilots want to live. Allocating more positions in Chicago, Houston, Cleveland and Denver will get more people to bid the left seat.
