It looks like the Chinese stock market is falling, partially because when one buys a Chinese stock you don’t really know what is owned.

well the UN doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a separate entity from China. It is China. The last piece of China that wasn’t overrun by communism.
this country is too trusting of China. We should have been investing in Central America instead of a military foe.
China will look at this economically and politically. As soon as they think they can get away with it, they will. As many people as they have in that country, they will gladly trade people for territory. It would cost the system less.

Isn’t the reason the UN does not recognize Taiwan is because mainline China is one of a handful of countries (Russia and USA) that have a single vote veto to over rule any motion put forth? They refuse, so Taiwan is not recognized, no matter how many other countries vote yes.

The difference between de jure and de facto. Taiwan is a separate country for all intents and purposes.
… this country is too trusting of China.
We’ve been preparing for the China threat for a long time. Xi has changed the dynamic for the worse, but this isn’t a total shock.

We should have been investing in Central America instead of a military foe.
No argument there. The problem is in a capitalist system money will move to where it’ll be used most efficiently. That’s been Asia for a while. Without government incentives and guidance, that’ll continue.

Maybe… maybe not. Look at this like a game of Risk, where nothing but territorial conquest matters and you’d be right. However, in the real world, a Chinese invasion of Taiwan makes little sense. I think it comes down to how you define “think they can get away with it.” I don’t think they’re anywhere as close as they make it sound with their rhetoric.

Do you mean this rhetoric?

‘In an interview with state media Thursday, Wang Yi accused Washington of “encouraging ‘Taiwan independence’ forces” in a way that “not only puts Taiwan into an extremely dangerous situation but also exposes the United States to an unbearable price.”’

Wake me for the invasion. Until then it’s all just talking smack and has been going on between us and the usual suspects as long as I’ve been alive. Don’t panic… live your life.

I agree but they also have nukes. So on the other hand, they can back up their rhetoric if they think it’s needed. So I don’t think we can just dismiss their rhetoric like we can when Iran leaders say death to America. At least until they get their nuke.

China actually thought this. Until Putin demonstrated total buffoonery of a simple invasion of a smaller neighbor. And ****ed off the world along the way.

In 1951 according to China, they accomplished the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet, and according to Tibet it was the Chinese Invasion of Tibet.

In 1997 Hong Kong was signed over to China, and was supposed to enjoy 50 years of significant autonomy. Right, they don't. If you know anyone who has spent any appreciable amount of time in China and done business there ask them how the Chinese are at honoring a contract.

China, like Russia, is no one's friend but their own.
