Default International Jumpseat

Hey guys. I’m thinking of jumpseating on you guys out of SFO to Asia and it looks like there’s some open business class seats. I know the gate agent will give me a coach seat but what’s the consensus on the crew or even the flight attendants moving you up to business? Obviously I’m not going to ask but is it common for the guys up front to offer if open or do the flight attendants own it? Thanks!

The Captain will normally discuss with the purser on where to seat you… FAs can get in trouble for doing it on their own if a passenger complains… not so much if Captain is the top cover. I’d recommend bringing some treats for the pilots and FAs to share… start off things right. Good luck and enjoy the trip.

They will offer cheap upgrades to those empty seats staring the day prior, if they’re still open the CA should put you in one….unless he’s a douche.

Captain can move anyone they want after the door closes… purses can be disciplined if they do it by themselves (don’t have the authority).

It very clearly says (at least it did a few months ago) in the FOM a Captain can give any open cabin seat to a jumpseater. I’ve pointed this out a few times to hesitant captains coming back from Europe in the winter when flights are empty. They have always been glad I showed them. I’ve gone back more than once to move the jumpseater up to a better seat.

If it was at the CA’s direction it’s a non-event. I do it all the time.
