Because they don’t want to upgrade to a leadership position correct? The problem I have with that is then these “lucky” FO’s who have an interview with United lie through their ****ing teeth at the interview claiming they “plan on upgrading”.

Then the pilot’s who actually do take the regional upgrade are being held off with interviews because United can’t afford to drain the low regional Captain staffing. So the more qualified pilots are getting shellacked.

I’ll agree forcing upgrades at any airline is not the right direction for the industry, but at least these pilots won’t have the opportunity to BS through the interview process anymore.

Well, that begs that question-
Are we hiring Professional Pilots, or are we hiring seat fills.

I never believed that we should be hiring anyone without TPIC/121/135 time. But that's just me!

Seems OO management has thrown another gauntlet down.. BUT-
If it's allowed per their Contract, we can't complain too much.
As someone who has ALWAYS advocated to "Fly The Contract", I have absolutely no issues with either side following what's in the contract.

If FO's decide to bail as they don't want to be forced into the left seat, it will be an interesting and honest question at any next job interview!

Company = "Why are you applying to us. We see you're a First Officer at SkyWest and you have been there 8 years"
Them = "Company is forcing me to upgrade to Captain and I don't want to be junior on the seat"
Company= "So you're willing to be junior at our company and never upgrade?"
Them= "umm... "

Again, some might not like it but if it's contractual and they have been there years, what is the real issue?

Skywest technically doesn’t have a contract.

Forced upgrades are in our FOM. Forced upgrades have been going on at ALPA regionals for years. Those forced upgrades at the ALPA regionals were top down not respecting seniority. The announcement by our management claims it will be “inverse seniority”. They take the most junior FO with 1,000 121 SIC and go from there.

They tried adding more sim sessions to the upgrade footprint for the short course upgrade program (calm nerves). They added a 20k bonus, then in TA 1 they offered $141 per hour to anyone with 750 121 SIC with an upgrade bid in. None of that worked so now they’ve decided to start threatening the FO’s. This is the threat, if you don’t have your bid in for the base you want and aircraft type we’ll decide for you, which will be the RJ200 in DTW just in time for winter ops.

This is the problem though. Mainline carriers are hiring regionals FO’s, and not just a few a day! A lot of responsibility to take the upgrade and anyone who’s been through any upgrade program knows you’re not given a pass during PRIA evaluations. The risk is not worth reward because shops like United decided 121 PIC doesn’t carry much weight on the app. As mentioned above, not only are they not respecting the position they’re actually intentionally not interviewing said pilots due to the regional captain shortage.

I think most Captains at OO are relieved by the news. The last three months and now this month I will be averaging 95 hours BLOCK. Idk how PBS was able to pull that off. And what tf do we get for it? United hiring holding us off?! Delta metering left seat DCI CJO’s?!

I finally got fed up waiting for UA and DL and submitted my app at AA. They called 2 days later.

application

Hello guys,

When I check my application, I get a message saying "your application is in review, you can not update the application at this time". Is there anyone who knows what's gonna happen next?

Thanks
