How long would reserve be for a new hire who was lucky enough to get a widebody out of EWR and then how long would they sit reserve as a capt on a 73 again out of EWR. With the upgrade times so fast I would think you would be on reserve as a basically "new hire captain" for a very long time,

Widebody reserve in EWR would probably be in the 4-5 year range (it's impossible to tell because what we see is looking into the past)
Reserve for NB CA is longer than that.
You don't have to be "lucky enough" to get EWR WB. The bottom 5+ people in the class get shafted with it. Literally anyone in the class can get WB EWR so long as they're on the class drop, which they behave been for 3+ months now.

shafted huh? The bottom of every class has always gotten what’s left over.
Not feeling the “woe is me” just because someone is forced to WB FO. I mean it’s not like they got ANC Dc-10 FE.

If ANC DC10 FE was on the drop, they'd get shafted with that.
Are they not shafted because it's not "as bad as I had it! Darn kids!"
No. They are shafted with what's leftover nonetheless. Just because it's not an FE position at $30/hr doesn't mean it's not shafting.

The only reason WB FO has become junior, is because NB FO has become so much more attractive lately. In “normal” times new hires would be commuting to reserve in EWR and SFO anyway, regardless of equipment. IAH and DEN were a pipe dream, regardless of equipment. And the thought of upgrading was something you hoped you could get to before you got you 20 year pin…
No one is getting “shafted” with WB FO. It’s a bunch of 24-25 year olds who are absolutely winning the airline career “timing is everything” lottery. At least until the industry flips again and the music stops.
