I’ve jumpseated before with a snowboard. Getting to the gate is awkward (through TSA, weird looks in the terminal, general maneuvering, etc.).
Once you are at the gate, the agent will generally just gate check it to baggage claim, and off you go…

My wife and I have done this on many mainline carriers when we were RJ scum. Make listing at counter, check skis at that time. We check ski tubes and a huge NF base camp duffel.
Don't rent after you spent your hard earned dough on those sweet powder planks.
At the end of the day, a jump seat listing has a PNR and that will allow you to check bags and track via app.
