Do I think there will be furloughs at United if there is a recession this year? Not a chance.

I think its risky to stay at a LCC. United is hiring 2000-3000 pilots every year for at least 5 years. Recession or not. We have 550 narrowbody planes on order and 100 787s with 100 options. We can’t just turn that off because of a few months of soft demand. I fly with a lot of FOs that came from LCCs and not one has ever said they made a mistake leaving. Pilots that left United to go to Fedex are now saying they wish they had not left United.

A pilot at an LCC has no control over what airline buys them in the future and what will happen to their assets, bases, etc. The economy might be in recession overall, but travel isn’t forecast to be in recession. Travel is forecast to increase. United is taking advantage of that.

This.

Imagine if no pilots showed up at a town hall.

I am still waiting for my spot on one of those 200 business jets on order for Avolar! I will probably be a Captain on the Boom supersonic plane before they arrive.

Since I'm new to this forum, I guess I need to get my count up before I have full access, so will make a few more posts here on this subject...

I'm not trying to be Dr Doom here. I don't believe that the world is coming to an end. But I do think that too many are discounting the market realities that exist. By definition, a "Black Swan" event is neither expected nor foreseen before it happens. Things are fine, until they're not. I recommend caution and perspective.

Upgrade on Shuttle by United is pretty junior also.

Personally, I'm holding out for ANC -10 CA, wanna be a freight dog.

Hyperbole much? so you’re say we won’t get any MAX planes, 321s or 787s? We have hired 5,000 pilots just since May 2021. I guess that’s not good enough for you. I wonder what we are going to do with all these pilots if we are not going to get those planes.

UAL has a long history of hiring up until the day they furlough… we are just a number to mgmt.

Wonder? If the economy tanks they’ll furlough every single one of those pilots and cancel jet orders if they have to. They’ll be compensated with bonuses while they send you the classic TFAYD furlough notice, and that will be that. How long have you been in this industry? You can’t be that naive.

Scotty boy already has his golden parachute lined up if this massive high risk growth bet blows up in his face.

It's always funny to read the "there's no F'n way we're gonna furlough or even stop hiring man" posts... especially the ones that go on to say "we've got all these planes on order that we need to staff"

They're right though... because airplane orders have never been cancelled, and old airplanes never get parked when new airplanes arrive, especially not at a rate of 2 old planes for one new plane. That never happens... never.
