Captain Upgrade with New TA: Yes or No
Vacancy 23-12V award was published three days ago and there's still 133 unfilled narrowbody Captain positions.
I'm shocked, but simultaneously not surprised.
Yes, we have an AIP and awaiting the all-important final contractual language. Of course the membership needs to ratify the final contract.
That said, it seems this latest vacancy is a harbinger of the pilot group's sentiment about the pending contract. Total compensation comparable to Delta, there's improvements in work rules for lineholders and reservists, and yet it seems like the progress on the new contract isn't moving the needle in any significant manner (as of yet) to properly staff the net additional metal for United Next. Certainly it ultimately is management's problem, but I'm surprised there are still plenty of First Officers bypassing upgrade even with a new contract imminent.

Based on the AIP, the union didn’t do enough to improve reserve. Only 12 days off during the summer months is missing the mark. Additionally, the callout time wasn’t extended beyond its current time. ALPA and United need to collectively learn that there’s a new generation taking over abs time at home quality of life matter a lot more than money. Do better and the upgrades will disappear every vacancy.

Now that I finally have the seniority to have weekends off my kids are grown and out of the house. You’re smart not to miss that.

Not sure this is true. Look at 737 captain at all bases. The number 10,000 pilot is about 90% which is within a margin +/- of a coupla percent across ALL bases and would be on reserve with no control of their schedule. Forget about commuting to 90% NB captain, the QOL would suck. That same 10K pilot would be about 55% in SFO as a 777FO working possibly 3 x 3 day trips for 75 hours a month. I don't care how much better the line holder improvements are(reasonably achievable), they will not pull guys like this to NB captain unless they are much better % than a bottom line holder. This is especially true for the 50% of the list that are commuters.
