United Airlines may have to pay over $1 billion in damages for religious discrimination

An excerpt:

United Airlines may be forced to pay upwards of $1 billion after a federal court ruled to grant nationwide class action status to over 2,200 employees who were placed on unpaid leave for choosing not to get vaccinated against COVID-19 during the pandemic.

A judge in the Northern District of Texas, fifth circuit, ruled on Friday that all United Airlines employees put on unpaid leave despite having a religious exemption to the vaccine can join Sambrano v. United Airlines, making the case one of the largest religious discrimination class action lawsuits in history.

“I’ve never seen anything this big,” Sherry Walker, co-founder of Airline Employees for Health Freedom, told the Washington Examiner. Walker is one of 2,211 class members on the lawsuit.
I'm not exactly sure how the author gets to a billion dollars for ~2000 people, that would be like $450 k each. That Woukd take a hell of a lot in punitive damages. A far more severe penalty than Purdue Pharma got for far more egregious actions.

Im no lawyer, but being granted class action status is a long way from winning a billion dollar settlement.

“I’ve never seen anything this big,” Sherry Walker. Im sure she hasn't.

We should file a class action lawsuit for all your incorrect predictions on Airline Pilot Central.

450k in damages to all the AA pilots you caused PTSD with your bankruptcy thread.

450 each is not a stretch for being out of work that length of time, plus punitive damages.

It is a long way away but it provides the plaintiffs with significantly more resources which is helpful when going after a well heeled corporation. It's way too early to assume this will amount to anything but probably too early to dismiss it out of hand.

If it's class action, it'll be like $900K to the lawyers and $100K to the plaintiffs....

I thought the $450K per person seemed crazy until this came out yesterday...

Nearly $700k total. $177k in back pay. $500k in punitive damages.

Kirby seems to be a liability when it comes to profit sharing checks (and among other things, perhaps).
