They need to keep the criminals in somehow.

The Rocky Mountain/West Coast cities sure seem to love their homeless drug addicts. Denver is probably one of the most unpleasant places on Earth. Around TK/Quebec is not any better, with the former "Quality Inn" halfway house between the Renaissance and TK.

Just part of doing business west of the Mississippi.

It goes without saying, but you should never trust an addict. Ever.

The problem is not many places are completly safe from random violence. Homelessness and mental health is a complex issue, and it is ignorant to blame one side and not also look in the mirror. Like all complex problems, there is good points on both sides of the aisle and I just wish people could work together to solve these issues.

Beleive me, I dont know many people outside maybe the extremes that walk around Denver, SF, etc and say "this is good."

I would advocate right now that we get more overnights in the near urban high-end neighborhoods compared to the 'core business district.' I do not think the intent of that langauge was to admire tall buildings, but rather be in an area that had local resturants, cultural ammenities, and open places to walk or jog.

We should have the hotel commitee reach out to the 'Big 4' consulting firms, and ask them which neighborhood their recent MBA grads tend to stay in. Even if their client is downtown - I know for a fact most are not staying there.

Some people (not you JFS 3) seem to have an emotional defensive response to hearing pilots ask if it’s safe to have a layover at this hotel considering recent events. I’m all for having the discussion. I don’t want to end up laying over in an office park but I’ve had some uncomfortable moments over the years with the crazies around that area as well. Did American change their hotel or are they sticking to the place?
Hi, Delta guy here, sorry to invade over here on your thread space. We changed our long layover hotels in a few cities. Portland long is now in Vancuver, WA across the river. SEA Long is now in Bellevue. Think we changed a few others as well. Not sure if our hotel committee did this for crime or whether we lost the contract at the old ones. Our NY long used to be the Roosevelt but that was turned into a migrant shelter.

Reality check: if this had not happened to an FA, no one would have known or cared. Pilots are just spooled up because they somehow they think they are special. Keep your head on a swivel and dont stare at your phone while walking.

Better yet the TSA should let flight crews carry defensive weapons with them

Im going to disagree with your and several others characterizations that this is "random violence". What happened in the French Quarter in New Orleans is random violence. This is not at all similar.

The 16th street mall for atleast 2 years has been known as a habitat for the unpredictable aggressive homeless. The French Quarter, many tourists (including young women in small groups) stroll without worry under the influence of heavy volumes of alcohol and have a reasonable expectation of safety. I don't see too many of the bachelorette party types on the 16th street mall mall...atleast South of Champa Street.

I really have no interest in how complex of an issue mental health and homelessness may be or to come up with ways to solve it......that is for others.
My interest is that NO industry colleagues end up dead, attacked, stabbed, robbed, raped or assaulted. Therefore clearly changing to another location would be a wise strategy to mitigate that threat.
The Cherry Creek Mall area as another has suggested may not be perfect but it seem to be much more suitable than the 16th Street mall.

I understand the reasoning behind the 14 hr or longer downtown layover but aren't there better areas say in Denver to layover (Cherry Creek)? Seems like safety (re: less crime) would be a better metric for finding locations versus straight "downtown".
PDR if you want a real answer.

No way I want to alter contract to accommodate these F’d up cities… just stop looking at your phone, wearing headphones, and thinking you are safe on layovers because you aren’t… keep eyes/ears alert and alter where you walk.
