May I ask how many of you were surprised when you heard this?

May I ask how many of you were surprised to hear about New Orleans over new Years?

How many of you would be suprised to hear of a stabbing event/violent attack near at our hotel CBS location in
  • Des Moines
  • Sarasota
  • San Antonio
  • Calgary
  • Kansas City
  • Nashville
The response saying attacks like this are rare but do happen in the United States is Pretty Weak Sauce IMO.
It seems as if there is an acknowledgment that there is a hightened risk in select locations, but it is a risk that we should just be comfortable with and that there really isn't a problem.
The incident in New Orleans made GLOBAL news and canceled a College Bowl Game. The incident in Denver maybe made local news.
Again any news producer will tell you "A shooting in ( insert rough part of town here ) isn't really news now is it?", implying it is expected.

Yes this is America. Bad things happen literally all the time. You can be a victim of a senseless act of violence simply by walking down the street, going to a grocery store, shopping at a Walmart or picking your kids up at school. Use your situational awareness and best judgement and hope for the best.

Draw a 5 block radius around any of our hotels, downtown or otherwise and tell me how many of them are free from homeless or assaults?

‘attacks like these have happened for decades… with the rise of social media it has made the reporting mainstream. In the UK, France, Belgium, Brazilian, Mexico these crimes happen all the time… can’t get away from it other than sitting in your room. When you venture out be smart and keep eyes/ears open and don’t travel alone at night or in areas you shouldn’t be in

I did a short stint in DEN years before COVID, right off the mall. Still have friends I visit frequently.

This is something that would have happend there, especially during "business hours". Maybe, MAYBE in the wee hours after bars close, but not in the day time.

Agreed, vigilence and mindset is the best. But how do you bascially exercise "the 21 foot rule" EVERYWHERE and ALL THE TIME?

Defeatiest attitude. Yes crime can happen anywhere, but it happens MUCH more frequently in certain areas. Pretty easy for hotel committees to determine where the safer parts of town are and move the layovers there while still providing amenities.

Yes yes, agree with you. People incluing but not limited to Pilots and Flight Attendents need to exercise better situational awareness and have better security habits and your recomendations are great places to start. I would just counter that a distracted woman on her phone with earpods in maybe spills her latte and burns herself as she bumps into someone also distracted coming out of the Cheescake factory.......I just dont think the outcome is Death had she been at Cherry Creek area as an example.

Yes 100% this. Look it I acknowledge we are not living in the America of the late 80's early 90's, nor do I expect our domestic overnights to be as safe as Haneda or Narita that being said for any given overnight location there are parts/sections of the city that are more safe than others, and I think the police and secuity consulting firms could cery easily give you this information......and I would be shocked if they recommneded the 16th Street mall as safer than Cherry Creek Mall or other areas in Denver proper. I just think that should be now a consideration when selecting locations for >14 hrs, given what we can all agree on is a more dangerous American urban area than the one we grew up with.

Some people (not you JFS 3) seem to have an emotional defensive response to hearing pilots ask if it’s safe to have a layover at this hotel considering recent events. I’m all for having the discussion. I don’t want to end up laying over in an office park but I’ve had some uncomfortable moments over the years with the crazies around that area as well. Did American change their hotel or are they sticking to the place?
i know I’m in the minority but I despise downtown layovers. Usually they are far away, traffic sucks, sounds of conventions and drunk people. I’d take someplace closer with some things to do and places to eat over downtown any day. For me it’s not necessarily safety, but more so it’s just more annoying.
