I was shocked last time how little training guys got that went back to the same airplane. I think if you have flown it within either the last 24 or 36 months you basically do a PT follwed by a PC. This time around I think they moved most of us to the bus before furloughing which might simplify things if/when they recall.

I hope for everyone's sake that there are 400 recalls...... but, the reality is that without growth or retirements there will be no recalls on the UA side anytime in the future. UA has no plans for either.

Now, if the 787 deliveries actually happen 1st quarter 2012, I think CAL will need to hire which translates to UAL furloughees as CAL new hires this summer/fall. Not sure of their staffing requirements, but 400 seems a little far fetched.

Time will tell. Pray/chant/whatever suits you for cheap fuel, a growing economy and a JCBA with scope.

We will all see soon. A supposed CAL system bid is around the corner and this can be telling. Word is that CAL is afraid to hire UA guys to then have the UA guys get called back to UA before the single op certificate. CAL doesn't want to train and then have them leave. Mgmt was hopping the union would go soft on the TP&A but they aren't.
Big question...why is CAL concerned about UA guys being recalled over the next year to year and a half? They know something, me thinks.

This seems ridiculous. It's the same airline FGS. How will they train them and then lose them to themselves? They will lose every single CAL pilot to United then, if this is the thinking that passes for logic today. So what is a few more that are already with the airline in the first place. UFB.

It is the same airline and it isn't. Until we have a JCBA and start the clock to an SLI we can't cross pollinate. So any UAL "newhires" can still get recalled to legacy UAL if such a recall were to occur. In the long run it probably won't mean much in terms of cost to the company but Jeffy can't seem to look past his short you know what so my guess is they won't "hire" anyone. That might cost a few cents you know

Actually Flyby is correct, when viewing this from the short term vantage. If CAL is indeed planning to add pilots this spring, and UAL this summer, it will occur while the company is still using completely separate operating certificates.

The returning UAL pilot would likely face a quick welcome back, and RQ2 reduced training, but the CAL side would need to provide the full new hire company indoc, and AQP training syllabus. Many of the UAL recalls would take the CAL offer (@ UAL rates), followed by the UAL offer. This creates a training and staffing problem for the CAL side, and it appears they are already leaner on pilot staffing than UAL.

It would not surprise me if the company requests to amend the TA, to prevent the above scenario from taking place. They might demand this in exchange for starting recalls sooner, rather than later.

The problem is the first UAL guys to come back are the "voluntary furloughs." Some of these guys have 747/777 Captain seniority and over 30 years at UAL and will get their Captain pay and not new-hire pay. I personally know one who was hired in early 1978 and intends to come back to CAL.

So how do you real Jr. CAL guys feel about having an old-f**t, 20 year captain flying in your right seat?

I can see, if this is a possible situation, CAL wanting to close that scenario down. But why on earth would someone want to pull gear on a 737 for minimum rest and days off, all the while holding onto a golden goose egg ticket back at the big U? I'm not convinced a pay scale remotely good enough exists that makes up for the rest of what's on the plate in that circumstance for this senior guy on LOA who allegedly plans to do this.

What on earth would ever make a new hire want to do that sort of thing? Are they, per happenstance, concerned new hires are not treated well enough to hold onto experienced and qualified people? Or?

they can shuffle aircraft around to create the shortage on the United side...very easy for him to do that...just change out a 737 for a 320...then creating the need for United to have a shortage....better yet, PARK about 200 RJ's and fill the shortage on the United side that way there is no need for the crossing to CAL then back to United.

These guys have this all planned out already, and a work rule change will create a shortage without growth or retirements too.
