For those of us furloughed twice, half wing signifies that although we have gotten off probation, we are still at the bottom twelve years later. I wouldn't be surprised to see us wearing them at CAL as "new hires" even though we aren't on probation; we paid a steep price for this merger, poor negotiations, and a management that doesn't think twice about sacrificing us.

I've seen full-wings worn upside-down, too.

Amen FMT! If I still had my half wing, I'd wear it.
I actually had a Captain I flew with ask me for my half wing pin once I got off of probation. That was a looooong time ago.......

Not 100%, no.

It means they are P O'd at someone...not sure if it means company, or ALPA, but thinking more the latter.....

I still have my half wing. Wonder if I can get it with a "10", or maybe next year, a star on it?

When/if I go back, I think I'll replace the 10 year pin with the half wing. Subtle but effective reminder of the "lost generation" of UAL pilots.

Next year (2012) I will get my "20 Year" ALPA Pin. I am at the bottom on the UAL list (twice furloughed) I just turned 40 years old.

Waiting for the tide to change............:{

That is a P/O'ed at ALPA thing. Don't you remember John Barton's Tirade entitled "Flying inverted" admonishing anybody who would have the indecency to be upset with ALPA's stellar performance over the last ten years?

I remember hearing about it, but a lot of us were on the street when the tirade happened. Trust me, if it happened while we were there, we would have been vocal!

I look at ALPA as I look at the NRA. I don't agree with a lot that they do, but they are the best game in town. I want to see ALPA do more for the major airline pilots (as we fund them) and more to restore what we have lost on furlough (as I have spent 5 of my 12 years at United on the street, and who know how long I will spend at Continental).

The best thing that we have going for us is that the furloughed pilots of both United and Continental now number clost to 2700. We are a large voting block and we are getting unified.

It's going to be an interesting year.

Curious on how you come up with the grand total of 2700 when looking at the two carriers?
