CAL poolies & Off-the-street hiring rumors
I heard yesterday from another crewmember that many of the poolies that were offered jobs at L-CAL back in '08 have been given October class dates. If that is true, my assumption would be that Charlie Venema has hired all the L-UAL guys he's planning on hiring from the furlough list and that off-the-street hiring might be just around the corner.
To further complicate this, when I talked to Charlie a few weeks ago he said that once we had announced an AIP, that the phone rang off the wall with furloughed guys that previously rejected the offer to come to the L-CAL side. I wonder if we are going to go over and above the TPA and now offer those guys a fig leaf, despite their initial rejection of the employment offer?
Any thoughts, or substantiation to that rumor?

There is a deadline, tomorrow, for getting into class before the end of the year. If enough people don't take it, I'd suppose those spots would have to come from somewhere. But until tomorrow, we won't really know how many spots were taken. Have you asked CV?

Spoke with Charlie on Friday. He's gotten about half the positive responses he needs. Looks like they might go to the streets...

All the classes through October are filled by furloughs. My understanding with the poolies, is that they will be offered a "soft" interview, basically to make sure they are still interested and haven't gotten a couple DUI or robbed a bank in the last 4 years. But it will not be an automatic class, like the furloughs got.

Charlie is a really nice guy, and forthcoming with the information he had at the time.
I'm just trying to get a couple of folks hired over here and want to get them in as early as possible.
thanks,

Many of our furloughees weren't willing to work under the CAL contract since the QOL is so horrible. With the new contract, we should see improvements in that area.
The eventual TA may get voted down, and in that case CAL will have to hire new guys since the L-UAL guys don't seem very interested.

A LOT of guys like to wait until the last minute to make major career decisions like this. A buddy of mine was 45 numbers on the "wrong" side of the furlough list and was all set to go overseas for a job. He thought he'd be furloughed for sure and this was 1 DAY before the final Nov 2009 deadline for voluntary furloughs to put in their notice in! The day after the voluntary furlough deadline, he gets a call from none other than the Chen-man himself telling him his furlough has been cancelled! They had gotten 60+ last minute guys volunteering for the furlough.
JMHO, I think there may be more takers that we think for this round of classes.

This isn't really a major career decision comparable to a recall. It's a temporary job offer until the lists merge.
So one guy says cv says 1/3 accepted, another 1/2, and another thinks there might be a last minute mad rush of acceptances. This is outta control I think my head is about to explode. I hope we get some idea how it turned out tomorrow.
