United Studying Boeing 777X Jets for Long-Range Fleet, CFO Says - Bloomberg
So glad we took the time to get that pay rate in our new contract. It's not like we didn't see that one coming.
United will study the benefits of the newest 777, unveiled this week with a record $95 billion in orders, with an eye to the strain on its balance sheet from the 292 jets already on order, Rainey said. The carrier has ruled out Airbus SAS’s A380, a double-decker capable of seating more than 500 passengers, as “really too big” for United’s needs, he said.

Unfortunately there was a negotiating "partner" involved in the UPA that had a short-sighted strategy involving large aircraft (cough, "jumbos," cough), pay bands, and the SLI.
It would have been funny had the long-term potential pitfall not been so obvious. At least the 777X won't see the light of day prior to the opening of the next contract so we can hopefully deal with this.

Both MECs voted separately to accept the TA and both were required to vote "yes" for it to go out for member ratification. Since the votes were separate, the UAL MEC had ZERO ability to "out vote" the CAL MEC. A "no" vote by either side would have sent the deal back to the table before the membership at large, where UAL outnumbered CAL, could even occur.
There are numerous items in the UPA where one side acquiesced to the other to get the deal done, and for better or worse the CAL MEC owns the jumbo pay banding fiasco. Just like the UAL MEC owns certain items.
Does "the most pay for the most pilots" or "we don't care what the bands are once the SLI is complete" or "we'll delay the SLI forever without these bands" ring a bell?
The CAL MEC is guilty of demanding the ridiculous bands, while the UAL MEC is guilty of accepting them as a compromise to get the deal done--with their questionable justification that an imperfect deal was better than no deal.
And here we are....living once again the consequences of short sighted actions....

If we'd have voted it down, the CAL NC wouldn't have changed their position.
In the end it looks like all their games came back to haunt them.

Yep. I hope they are thrilled with their placement on the new list.

Not true. The CAL NC held the entire contract hostage until they got what they wanted. That's why it took three years from merger date almost.
If we'd have voted it down, the CAL NC wouldn't have changed their position.
