Default 737 displays

Is there a reason UA is still sticking to round dial displays? Now that -500's are gone is there a plan to switch over to tape?

Or maybe the 1990s when Continental first got the NGs that were ordered with backwardly compatible round dial displays instead of next generation tape displays. It only took 15 years to get the switch flipped to tape!

Feds said that we had to do this to the NGs to get the similar type approval. Once the last 500 was gone we go PFF/ND in less that 6 months. Painful for sure.

That's too bad. It's such a great OLD airframe...they ought to put the old school mechanical ADI's and HSI's back in for old times sake. Remove the DME hold, the GS display, the FMC and the FD.....all of it! Maybe put the little windows back in, some young hot FA's with hats and 60's attitudes toward sexual mores and availability...

And the 500s had been hardware retrofitted at extra cost ($200k per?) to not display tape to make them compatible for type rating with the 300s. The FAA required this for a single type but the FAA didn't require them to be a single type. We looked at round dials for 20 years because the company didn't want to have different type ratings way back when they got the 500s. The tape displays aren't just pretty. They are safer because they display the info in a more coherent and intuitive format. As usual the company prioritized cost (single type) over safety. And the beat goes on with no more ground school, train by memo, etc.
