Lee, the most comprehensive study of pilot retiree longevity (Wright State using American Airlines pilots) published in 1996, six years after the article you cite, shows pilots live significantly longer than the general population. Interestingly, the next most popular study, published in 1992 uses the same numbers as the article you cite to show pilots have a lower mortality rate than the general population. Either way, "the average pilot will be dead by 67" stuff is hyperbole.

So, let me see if I follow...if my piloting skills have eroded like my cerebellum over the years - and as a result of this putrefaction I am now a below average pilot, how much time do I have left? 'Cause I want to go out swinging....

How can that be? I mean all I heard for THREE YEARS was how many wide bodies you guys brought to the merger. Now I find out a pilot has to be in the top 65% system wide to even think about flying the right seat of a 777 from ORD - DEN. Very curious...

Well, sort of serious. I suspect things will change with a) FAR117 and b) changes in the EWR flying that may dilute the amount of productive trips.

I will admit I did ok and my pay hours are considerably higher than my flight hours, but I don't think that's going to happen as often in the future.

I doubt Toddnel is exaggerating in the least, FWIW. In fact, guys that play the game... well, they do alright.

1953-1988...Britain, Canada, Argentina? Copy...drinking, smoking, horrendously crappy diet and zero exercise, flying on the back side of the clock...got it. "Back in the day" guys died really young, got it.

There are a number of studies that have profiled aerospace employees and their expected longevity; suffice-it-to say...we're likely ahead of where guys were 25-30 years ago.

Just sayin'...

"Senior Manning opportunities may be available on Dec 18th & 19th, for 737 Captains (except Guam). If interested, call Crew Scheduling and let them know."

Good thing we're staffed properly.

Former CP Fred S used to say, "You don't build a church parking lot for Easter Sunday." No wonder he was hated.

[QUOTE=bottoms up;1536135]

If you can't live on 100 grand a year when the poverty line is 27 thousand "family of 4" then you have bigger problems.

Dude unless you live in bumf%#k Oklahoma even a 100,000 a year with kids doesnt cut it. Welcome to 2013. That family living on 27k a year is living pretty bad, and I'm supporting the lazy bast@&ds. I was raised where if you want to be successful and have financial security you WORK. Worked for my dad, works for me. Lots of guys work a lot harder for less then I pull in.
