Default 777 SFO F/O reserve life/commuter

Wife looking at a possible upgrade from the Guppy. Would be commuting in from DEN (now commuting to LAX).

What's life like as a 777 SFO F/O junior reserve by way of schedule? How often do you get assigned short calls? How long are the actual trips that get assigned? We've seen a few of the back to back awards for the jr. line holders in some months. How often do reserves end up getting that? Would a crash pad be necessary for the RSA days? Or are the reserve assigned trips typically commutable day of?

Any insight to help make the decision would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Senior enough that we're guessing several more bids before she could get there. Just trying to see if taking the SFO 777 right now is a good or terrible idea for us.

Commuting to reserve sucks. Commuting to reserve in SFO REALLY sucks. Just FYI. She can expect lots of short calls. They are a bit short in that seat so she will be busy

Is there any difference in short call timing/hours of notice for the WB versus the NB fleet?

No, reserve rules are reserve rules.

Communting to reserve will sadden one's outlook, harden their soul, make food taste bland, and in general, make them no fun to be around. On the upside, the FAA has authorized use of depression meds.

OK for those that commute and are on reserve, do you try to aggressively pick up trips so you can avoid the short calls? She used to do that often using etriptrader back on the 'Bus in ORD and it sort of built a crappy line month for her rather than waiting for the phone to ring at all hours.

I commuted from SFO to EWR for a few months as a new hire. Not that bad, I usually got a late short call the first day so took the redeye out and then would come home early the last day or even the night before depending where I was on the list. Not as many people doing the commute as SFO-DEN and a ton of flights. Keep in mind the NB has only one FDO a month where the WB have more, so your schedule is much more at the whim of the company.

Start watching open flying on the 777 in SFO - there's not much, if any. The assignments she can expect are all short calls for trips that open because other commuters don't make it.

Not sure about this, but remember her days off will be movable except for the 6 day Holy Day block
