Thanks for the info. I was looking at the WIA and OBAP websites, I'm unwilling to support organizations that look to "empower" based on race or gender... this is not something I can support, especially since said peoples seem to have considerable pro-hiring bias in the industry already and benefit from legal discrimination. We're all humans and all have our defects...to prefer pilots based on pre-determined genetics seems horrific, especially considering the safety sensitive nature of our job functions.
Hopefully United will attend a FAPA or AeroCrewSolutions conference sometime soon. In the meantime, I'll wait my turn...

I don't mean to de-rail the thread...but why do you say OBAP wants to empower based on race/gender? I just read our mission statement again and it's about our desire to use our knowledge and experience in life to mentor youths that are sometimes lost or unaware of career opportunities available in S.T.E.M disciplines and don't know that these fields are within their reach. I think that unless you have been active as a member, participated in the community school events and A.C.E camps, that your statement is way off.
Is it because we are mostly a minority organization? We welcome any race/ethnicity; but it has been my experience that a lot of people have joined solely to benefit themselves thanks to our networking opportunities with members in all areas of aviation. I myself am a minority but not in the majority (or even close) at OBAP; and no member has ever expressed their desire to help out only a certain group of people. Instead we all help each other because we feel unity and obligation to push each other forward because we all remember our struggles and work beside each other in the community projects held regularly...so we see those that are active, participate and have a sense of helping the community/youths; they become part of our personal network within a larger one. I have been actively seeking out more members with CFI's or any aviation experience to add to our chapter but not many people like to donate their time and see the makeup of our organization and don't bother to learn about what we do. Btw I'm Hispanic and never have I come across someone who made me feel marginalized because I'm not African American.
Please consider attending a meeting where community projects are discussed and think of how your ratings/experience/wisdom can help mentor younger people and keep interest in aviation/math/engineering/technical careers.

Women and blacks are under-represented in the profession compared to their percentage in the general population. There isn't anything wrong with these organizations since they just inspire and support those trying to make it into this industry and be successful.

"The struggle to expand African-American Pilot presence in the faces of unfair hiring/retention practices continues to be an uphill effort..."
Just "inspire and support"?
When you retire from a legacy decades from now with a multi-million dollar B-fund and are on the operating table about to have your widow maker blockage removed, you are told your cardiac surgeon finished at the bottom of his class and has a troubled surgical history, but that's O.K. because people like him were under-represented? Good luck.
Count me out.

"Job applicants with white names needed to send about 10 resumes to get one callback; those with African-American names needed to send around 15 resumes to get one callback."

It is not my intent to derail this thread. I'm certain OBAP does many good things and fills a void, but per their website:

I got caught up in negative thinking from pilots that have attended events and have not had a positive experience, but I don't have all the facts and their behavior could have caused their lack of success.
Sorry to ruffle the feathers of the last few posters...sorry to derail the thread.

I judged both organizations, OBAP and WIA, unfairly. For that I apologize.
