Default Future of IAD hub?

I was curious if anyone had thoughts on future of the IAD hub? I've seen a couple Internet articles that are unsure of a future permanent UAL presence there as there has been a recent loss of a wide body route there and competition from DCA (AA). Also, is it a pretty junior base?
Thanks!

My two cents, no changes to IAD in the long term. Major O&D population base hub, and only international hub in DC area. Same size or small growth in the decade ahead.

Sure would be nice if the terminal was renovated.

Lots of vacancies on the last two bids. Seems that's a positive sign.

About 20 years or so, UAL made a big push to grow IAD and within a few short years they were drawing it down.

Are you sure about that time frame? The big draw down was when Smizik took control and wanted to make EWR the European gateway. Before that MIA and JFK were effectively closed for international flying and that flying and paxs were forced through IAD with some going to ORD.

I think you meant "imploded and demolished."

They just need to start with a clean slate. (But that's true at a lot of airports: EWR, SFO, LAX,......)

And that's the plan! (imploded and demolished). Really. That's why the train goes to the middle of nowhere. C/D is a temporary terminal....for the last 30 years.

On Dulles Airport's concourse route, 'C' stands for 'calorie-burning'

Fairly Certain. It was in the mid-90's I believe. They decided to build up the guppie fleet there and grow the base. After about 3 or 4 years they started re-trenching from their plans. I can't recall exactly what they were actually trying to accomplish by the build-up. There may be so people who were around then who could fill out the story.

A major recession or an event(s) causing a large retraction in the airline industry and we'll see which of the hubs 185nm apart survives.
