Yes, and then sit over there with the speaker as loud as it will go, miss half the calls, and still not hear what I say. Sorry, my hearing is more important than being social. UFluyMike's for me from T/O to cruise in the bus.

Uh, I've honestly met basically no one as deaf as you describe in any cockpit. I suppose the old 727 pilots who spent twenty years in that thing might've been that deaf, but they're mostly retired now.

And before you say I haven't flown with old guys, I've flown with pilots near retirement age - pilots who've been with AA for 30-plus years. Their hearing has been fine.

So, protect your hearing with an A-20 in a modern widebody jet if it makes you feel better, but it is basically unnecessary in today's newest jets, such as the 787 the OP mentioned.

For most people in one of today's jets - 737 excluded - the Telex 850 ANR is more than ample.

I fly the 787 and use a Telex 850, although the 750 would be fine as well. Just depends on your personal preference.

It comes off in cruise and just use the speakers and hand mike. Quietest flight deck I've ever been in.

I was wondering if I could get some help too.

After purchasing my brand new porsche I found that just after I turn the ignition it gets a touch loud. Any recommendations for hearing protection? Once I put it in drive it gets quiter. Looking to spend another $1000 any way possible.

I have the same problem… I've found that turning up my 16 speaker stereo seems to drown out the engine and exhaust noise.

I use the Telex 850, but only because I came off the 737. It's overkill on the 787. Nobody seems to use anything above 18k. The -8's are extremely quiet at all speeds, the -9's have some noise from the recirc fan. I wouldn't buy a fancy headset because you'll barely wear it IMHO.

ive noticed I have a much harder time understanding radio calls with the speaker. So I use the headset all flight. I’m on the 73 though.
