I wouldn't say not having a degree is taking the easy way out. Not everyone went to a university, many of us got our ratings while working a job we already had. That being said yes it helps to have one for sure. But it doesn't sound like hes being lazy. I don't have a 4 year because i did my ratings while in the military, and the fact that United doesn't require one right now is a bonus to me and people like me. I am anything but lazy. Just don't have a BS degree in BS...

Pilots hired in 2014-present without degrees are in the single digits. I got mine while working. Expect to need a degree to get hired.

not trying to start anything. But unless you are a CP in the recruiting department, I have a very hard time believing that in 2 years UAL has hired 9 or less pilots without a 4 YR.

IDK. But I've been here 19 years, and I know 1 pilot without a 4 YR....and he was a ramper...mechanic...then pilot. And his dad worked here for 35 years. Good luck.

Echoing other posts there were 2-3 mentioned. One guy is on here. BK has said there are a 'handful' Of the 100+ people I know hired here in the last 2\3 years I know zero. I also know zero from the 4 classes I met in training last year. Yes, there may be a few not announcing off rooftops about their lack of a 4 yr. ( I got mine online 5 months before my interview)

It would be a disservice to tell anyone they don't need a degree to get on here, I KNOW getting mine was what got me the call. DAL, AS, AA, SWA, B6, FDX and UPS ALL told me to get my degree as well.

I'm not trying to be lazy. I'm just confused as to with the airlines needing more pilots I feel like they are going to drop the degree requirements.

But that's not your real problem. Your real problem will be competing with pilots that have similar flying qualifications but also have degrees. You will be able to get flying jobs without one, but the "best" jobs will be the most competitive. If you are shooting for the top you will be competing for a job---and this applies to both airlines and corporate jobs. There is a HUGE difference in compensation and quality of life between the top tier of the industry and the bottom.

Also, with the looming pilot shortage the FAA is actually making additional rumblings about further lowering the 1500 hr rule for military pilots and pilots that have completed their pilot training as part of an approved professional degree program. Thus, we could see a new pipeline directly from universities to major airlines providing additional competition for those without degrees.
