Crew Staffing: UPS/IPA Agree to Meet Next Week
At the Company’s request, UPS and IPA will continue discussions related to crew staffing concerns originally raised by the Company, particularly those involving the B747.
"The Company is seeking to paint this as a temporary problem limited to the 747, and nothing more,” said IPA President Bob Travis. “We disagree. The true problem is chronic and systemwide, affecting all fleets, seats and domiciles.”
Travis added that the Company’s 747 staffing fiasco just happens to be today’s headline, but that the root cause is a long-standing, faulty approach to both aircraft acquisition and pilot staffing by UPS senior management.
“Today it’s the 747, but tomorrow it will be another fleet, another domicile unless UPS fundamentally changes its approach,” he added.“Foot-dragging on aircraft orders and pilot hiring is not a solution. Attempting to violate the contract and getting caught is not a solution. When a crisis predictably occurs, to then expect every pilot to do the work of two pilots is not a long-term solution."
Regarding the discussions requested by UPS next week, Travis said that the IPA will remain focused on solutions that address the underlying staffing issues. “But members should keep in mind that we are dealing with UPS and that no progress will come quickly or easily--everything is a fight,” he added.
UPS would have you believe that this is a “747 only” issue. The EB reminds the membership that the IPA is fighting for ALL members, and will communicate with the membership as developments warrant.

I hope people stop posting on the B&G the minimum list of what they need negotiated from UPS before we, as a pilot group, are willing to solve ‘their’ problem

I always thought “the EB speaks for me” was self-explanatory.

Apparently he is smarter than the EB.

Long time swimmer

Hopefully, you guys don't get this extended. As one who has been swimming for a year now, I would love to help with the shortage of pilots. Hopefully, I can help with this problem. Very frustrating to see them continually adding to the pool and never calling.

Given the above, imagine also having a big wad of cash shoved in your pocket. This is almostly exactly what working at Brown feels like.

UPS announced today 275-300 new pilots for 2019.

A little more than 7 months to go before UPS has to have the lift equivalent of 6 MD-11s and 3 767s. I think the new -8s fill that void. Getting the 747 training pipeline fixed is an even bigger issue though.

We have added 3 767s also. And will prob have a couple more by then. But we have also added several new routes and frequencies so it will still be tight.

We're scheduled to get 6 Ochos in 2019, and I'd guess between 3-5 763Fs (all nine factory new 767s come 19-20).

Heard the SDF 747 sim isn't going to be certified until mid-Feb.
