To the OP - The Winged Hussar - lots of good advice here! Listen to the likes of salty, they’ve been around and they know how the system works.

APPLY and let the HR worry about your eligibility. You worry WAY TOO MUCH over issues you have zero control over. Very Un-Hussarian of you. ;-) Put those wings on and ATTACK your target!

YES, they care about previous employment here and they’ll know everything about you by the time you show up for the interview (we pretty much invented the NSA :-/ ). ...but who cares, apply, attend a few job fairs, have a good attitude and show them you’ve moved on from your past and that you’re ready to show them the new you. Until you apply you won’t know.

Wish you the best.

Thanks to everyone for all the good advice, and awesome picture that I'm totally going to steal, you know some history!

I’m currently an MD11 captain at UPS. I got fired as a loader for UPS in 1982 for missorting 6 packages while on probation. I owned up to it at the interview. They had a good chuckle and thought nothing of it. Practice a short pithy response to the inevitable question, be honest, and it shouldn’t be a problem. Best of luck!

The key is to get in front of some humans. Your story is totally fine. The one big worry is that with what may end being a LOT of applications, they just start dumping folks who don't check every first box perfectly. I've done hiring. If you get 100 resumes you are first just trying to screen out a bunch. I'm amazed UPS keeps these records that long, but if I was fighting through 100 resumes there might be some appeal to skip the no-rehire folks.
